I’m always looking for healthy options to tackle my huge sweet tooth. I grew up in a household that had dessert every night so needless to say, I love my sugar but also know that too much of anything is not good for living a healthy, well-balanced life.
Recently I was watching an old holiday episode of Bobby Flay on the Food Network and he was making a cocktail with frozen grapes. Never trying frozen grapes before, I thought – why not. Well, they were delicious …. a new favorite snack and healthy too.
If you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to graze on room temperature grapes and before you know it, they’re all gone. Although a healthy snack option, freezing grapes are even better because a few will satisfy you and go a long way! I initially thought I’d break a tooth biting into one, but frozen grapes have a sweeter, creamy texture – reminds me of an Italian ice – and health benefits to boot.
One cup of grapes is less than 100 calories and full of antioxidants. These little wonders also provide you with Vitamins C, A, B-6, along with Calcium, Iron and Magnesium. They’ve also been given the status of “super food” by helping to reduce the risk of conditions such as asthma, heart disease, hypertension and even diabetes.
A few simple ways to enjoy grapes:
– Frozen – my favorite
– Chopped up and added to a simple salad (Green, Quinoa or Farro)
– Roasted and served with slightly sweetened ricotta cheese on a crostini (YUM)
– Top a yogurt parfait with some fresh or roasted grapes for an added punch
– Include them in your favorite Thanksgiving dressing
